The Ultimate Brazil Birdwatching Itinerary: Pantanal, Bonito & Cerrado
Few places in the world let you bird three distinct biomes from a single base. In Mato Grosso do Sul, Bonito sits within a few hours of the Cerrado, the Pantanal and the Chaco — each with its own avifauna. Here is a flexible framework to enjoy all three in one trip.
Why base yourself in Bonito
Bonito has an airport just 15 minutes from the centre, a good network of hotels and restaurants, and quick access to the Cerrado’s gallery forests. It is the ideal launch point for expeditions into the Pantanal and the Chaco, without giving up comfort between field outings.
Suggested 7-day framework
Day 1 — Arrival in Bonito. Airport transfer, check-in and a gentle late-afternoon outing for your first Cerrado species.
Days 2 and 3 — Bonito Cerrado. Mornings in the gallery forests along the Formoso, Perdido and Mimoso rivers. Targets include Red-and-green and Blue-and-yellow Macaws, Red-legged Seriema (Cariama cristata), Helmeted Manakin (Antilophia galeata) and a great diversity of grassland and forest birds.
Days 4 to 6 — Pantanal expedition. Travel to the world’s largest wetland. This is where the great icons live: Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria), Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks and the regional speciality Mato Grosso Antbird (Cercomacra melanaria). Dawn and dusk are the peak of activity.
Optional extension — Brazilian Chaco. For birders after rare specialities, an extension to Porto Murtinho opens the door to the Chaco, with species such as the Black-bellied Woodpecker (Dryocopus schulzi), rarely recorded at other Brazilian destinations.
Day 7 — Departure. One last morning in the field before the transfer back.
How many days do you need?
A 3-to-4-day trip already yields a strong list focused on the Cerrado plus a foray into the Pantanal. To include the Chaco and explore each biome at a relaxed pace, allow 7 to 10 days. Every extra day broadens the diversity — and your chances with specific target species.
