Best Time to Visit Brazil for Birdwatching: A Month-by-Month Guide
There is no single "best month" to go birding in Brazil — it depends on the region and the species you want to see. In the Centre-West, where Bird Bonito operates, the calendar is written by water: the Pantanal's flood-and-drought cycle reshapes the landscape and concentrates (or disperses) the birdlife through the year.
The two seasons that matter
Instead of four seasons, think in two: the dry season (roughly May to October) and the wet season (November to April). The dry season brings clear skies, firm roads and birds concentrated around the shrinking pools and bays that still hold water. The wet season brings rain, lush vegetation, intense breeding and the arrival of migrants — but also harder access to some areas.
Pantanal: the dry season (May to October) is prime time
For most birdwatchers, the dry season is the peak. As the water recedes, fish and invertebrates become trapped in smaller pools, and waterbirds gather in spectacular numbers: Jabiru mycteria (Jabiru storks), Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks, herons and kingfishers all forage side by side. It is also the season when the Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is easiest to observe, and when mammal activity — including jaguar — reaches its peak. July to October combines dry weather, good roads and high wildlife concentration.
Pantanal: the wet season (November to April)
The rainy season is not worse — it is different. The plain turns green, many species begin breeding, and the scenery becomes spectacular for photography. Austral migrants arrive to spend the summer. In exchange, heat and humidity rise, mosquitoes appear, and some dirt roads become impassable. It is a rewarding time for birders who already know the basics and want breeding behaviour and green landscapes.
Bonito and the Cerrado: all year round
Unlike the Pantanal, the Bonito Cerrado can be birded year-round. The gallery forests along the Formoso, Perdido and Mimoso rivers keep constant bird activity, and the town's excellent infrastructure — with an airport just 15 minutes from the centre — makes Bonito a comfortable base in any season. Macaws, seriemas, the Helmeted Manakin (Antilophia galeata) and dozens of grassland and forest species are present throughout the year.
Brazilian Chaco: the dry season (July to October)
Expeditions to the Chaco, near Porto Murtinho, also favour the dry season, when access is safer and the Chaco specialities — such as the Black-bellied Woodpecker (Dryocopus schulzi) — are more active. It is a niche add-on, ideal for birders chasing species rarely recorded at other Brazilian destinations.
What about migrants?
Two migratory flows enrich the lists: austral migrants, arriving from the south of the continent during spring and summer (October to March), and boreal migrants, present during the northern summer. To maximise diversity, transitional months — such as September and October — often combine residents with fresh arrivals.
Quick summary
July to October: best overall — dry season in the Pantanal and Chaco, concentrated birds, stable weather. November to March: breeding, green landscapes and austral migrants, with more heat and rain. All year: Bonito Cerrado.
The ideal time depends on your target species. Tell Bird Bonito what you want to see, and we will plan your trip for the best window for your list.
